Decades of human interventions for flood protection, energy production, and land use have degraded the Lower Isar valley in Germany.
Flusserlebnis Isar, a pioneering collaborative project by local nature protection and water management authorities, focused on extensive restoration efforts.
Biodiversity has been revitalised in the region through innovative river engineering techniques and habitat creation. The project has introduced a new 420m river branch, established 20 new or optimized water bodies, and created 5 hectares of shallow water habitats vital for river fish reproduction.
This initiative has significantly contributed to preserving rare habitats and emblematic species, ensuring a sustainable future for the Isar valley and coming generations.
