Restoring Denmark’s raised bogs to enhance biodiversity and combat climate change

Raised bogs in Denmark have been badly damaged by drainage and unwanted species, leading to habitat loss and high CO₂ emissions. Without action, these unique ecosystems—and the rare species they support—would continue to decline.

To reverse the damage, bogs need restored water levels, better management, and support from local landowners.

The LIFEraisedbogs project made this happen. It restored over 900 hectares of degraded bogs by improving hydrology, removing unwanted plants, and working closely with private landowners. Already, 235 hectares have shown clear recovery. The project also aims to cut CO₂ emissions by up to 22,000 tonnes each year—proving how nature restoration can benefit both climate and biodiversity.
