LIFE-FOODWASTEPREV set out to tackle the problem of nearly 400 000 tonnes of food waste generated by households annually in Hungary. Addressing this challenge required a holistic approach: a food waste prevention campaign reached several million Hungarians, and around 300 000 students participated in a primary school campaign. The team also published guidelines for the catering, retail and food industry sectors. The project efforts led to a four-per-cent reduction in food waste generated by households. The team also worked with legislators to shape new regulations on food waste and networked widely across Europe to learn best practices and disseminate its findings.
