Desertification is a serious problem in parts of Italy, Spain, and Portugal. Due to climate change and poor land use, the land is becoming dry and less productive, threatening farming, nature, and local communities.
To stop this, there’s a need for sustainable ways to manage land and protect soil and water.
The LIFE DESERT-ADAPT project tackled this challenge head-on. It promoted adaptive methods like agroforestry, permaculture, and regenerative agriculture. Using its Desert-Adaptation Model (DAM), the project improved soil health, boosted water retention, and made ecosystems more resilient. It also brought together local stakeholders and encouraged policy changes to spread these solutions across the Mediterranean.
