LIFE Climate value chains

Promoting low-carbon timber supply chains to reduce emissions and support sustainable construction in Europe

The transport sector, especially road and air, is a major contributor to climate change, accounting for over 20% of the EU’s CO₂ emissions. Growing freight demand and longer transport distances have increased the environmental footprint of timber supply chains, despite the availability of regional wood resources.

To tackle this challenge, the LIFE Climate Value Chains project promoted local and climate-friendly timber supply chains. It encouraged planners and architects to use short-distance materials, integrated grey energy into public procurement, and raised awareness of how material flows affect climate change.

By reducing CO₂ emissions and increasing the use of renewable building materials, the project strengthened regional value chains and helped advance the EU’s circular economy and low-carbon construction goals.
